There aren’t any coin mints in San Jose. However, San Francisco is home to one of the four U.S. Mint facilities. The San Francisco Mint was established in 1854 to serve the miners of the California Gold Rush. Today, the mint is the largest producer of collectible coins in the U.S. and the largest proof coin producer in the world.
Two of the most popular coins produced by the San Francisco Mint are the 1854-S Quarter Eagle and the 1854-S Half Eagle. Both coins are one the rarest coins worldwide. The 1854-S Quarter Eagle had a mintage of 268 pieces, whereas only three 1854-S Half Eagle gold coins are presently known to exist.
The other three mints are located in Denver, New York, and Philadelphia.
